The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will delay a plan introduced a year ago designed to reduce the risk of BSE, better known as mad cow disease, in cattle imported from Canada.

In 1999 just 37 recalls were issued on a variety of foods and drugs. To date in 2009, the number of recalls totals more than 600, the vast majority of which are related to salmonella-tainted peanuts linked to the Peanut Corp. of America.
